We all know that Doja Cat is the icon this generation needed, but did you know her before her 'Juicy'? Before her 'Mooo!'? Even before that? This post is going to illustrate the evolution of Doja Cat, and maybe give you some new playlist bangers. Photos of Doja Cat via Wikipedia and YouTube, written by Rae.

Doja was born in October (21st) 1995 and raised in LA where she started to pursue her music career at just age 16 in 2013 when she first starting using Soundcloud. Growing up she had a small background in the arts, taking lessons in dance and piano as well as listening to Hip-Hop icons regularly, like Nicki Minaj and Busta Rhymes who have very clearly impacted her music and aesthetic. Once she was signed to RCA Records (Sony) it wasn't long before she brought out her first EP, titled Purrr! which we can tell is so on-brand for her, considering her age and life stage at the time is very different to Doja in 2020. The lead single 'So High' led to 30 million streams, and got the attention of many experts like Fader and Paper.

From 2014 - 2017 Doja worked on an extended play version of her initial Purrr! EP, as well as getting 'So High' featured in the Empire TV show soundtrack. 2015 led to Doja being signed to another label - OG Maco's label OGG, Between these years she kept grinding on both Soundcloud and Youtube to get herself noticed and to build a following, as well as creating invaluable industry connections with other artists through collaborations like L8LOOMER's 'Right Side' which Doja featured on.

March (30th) 2018 saw Doja Cat release her first full-length album 'Amala', and then later in August (10th) 2018 she released the well-know 'Mooo!' track which catapulted her into celebrity domain; this novelty song not only turned into a meme but also a viral music video with 10 million views in the first few days and currently over 65 million views on YouTube alone! February 2019 saw Doja Cat collaborate with the equally as unique Rico Nasty on the single 'Tia Tamara' based off the idea of boobs. A month later and Doja was booked to perform on YouTube channel Colors to perform her song 'Juicy' which is from the repackage of the Amala album - incase you didn't know the inspiration behind the Juicy song, it was a song about butts. Shortly after in August 2019 Tiga remixed Juicy, helping Amala chart at number 162 on the Billboard 200 list.

2019 brought us the album 'Hot Pink' in November (7th) which peaked at number 19 on Billboard 200 and on December (15th) she announced that she had a feature on a song in the Birds of Prey film soundtrack called 'Boss Bitch'. 'Hot Pink' brought us the iconic single 'Say So', which has been boosted by the up and coming social media app that is TikTok. During a viral dance trend on the app, 'Say So' was picked up by TikTokers making the single hit 29M views on Doja's YouTube, 2.3M on Jimmy Fallon's YouTube as well at TikTok compilations on YouTube hitting figures like 3.8M views, while fans await the official music video release later this month.

Spotify describes her music and career as "Cooking up vibrantly, candy-coated beats, dropping bars doubled-up on double entendre, and singing with claws out, Amala unlocks a sweetly sexy world soundtracked by wild hip-hop, twisted pop, and smoked-out R&B. Asserting a feline-esque dominance and a style that can only be described as every colour in a box of crayons, Doja Cat’s unapologetic charisma, charm, and confidence immediately take centre stage."

And the Fader describes her sound as "spacey, eastern-influenced R&B." As well as Vibe (at the time) calling her an "18-year-old psychedelic prodigy."

As you can see, the experts love Doja and so do we. Check her out on regular streaming platforms (Apple, Spotify, YouTube) and we can't wait to see what she brings in 2020.
